Purusha and Prakriti

Updated: Jan 16, 2022

🕉According to Classical Yoga Philosophy the entirety of creation is made up 2 elements: the eternal unchanging (Perusha) and the physical changing (Prakriti). Everything is made up of these, including us. Written in the Yoga Sutras is a core teaching that the root of all human suffering comes from the forgetting about the Perusha/Eternal and identifying solely with the Prakriti/Physical.

🌟The physical world shapes who we are from the time we are small, through every experience we encounter along the way. If we are lucky, as we grow older we become more aware and begin to question “why are we here?”, “what is this life all about?” and “who am I really?” If our curiosity is peaked we search to take in knowledge that resonates as truth and we begin to see how what we once thought was important in life- money, status, beauty- isn’t permanent and doesn’t necessarily lead to true happiness...

💜Once we realize this we then begin to extricate ourselves from the bondage of the conditioned mind in order to connect with the part inside that is eternal. The ancient practices of Yoga were designed specifically for this purpose- to get you to look beyond the noise of the ever changing mind and see that you are the witness behind the noise watching your life unfold. You are the eternal unchanging wrapped in the physical changing and this life is an opportunity for you to wake up and remember who you really are. How you do this is by no longer searching for things outside of yourself but by learning how to turn and look within for the wisdom and happiness you seek.

🌟This is a huge task yes, but guess what- luckily Yoga gave us an 8 Fold Path a guidebook for living life as our most authentic selves. Everything we do when we show up for practice is a part of the Path- the mindset, the movement, the breathing, the sense withdrawal, the focus, the concentration, the meditation, the surrender. As you practice on the mat and in your life- watch the noise in your mind and remember that you are the one watching. With lighthearted curiousity be the witness and allow everything else to flow.
