According to the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali there are 5 Hindrances of the Mind which cloud our understanding of who we really are. This week in classes I am talking about the 2nd Klesha or Hindrance which is Asmita or Egoism. The Ego is the mask we present to the world. When the Ego is in charge our mind is judgmental, our thinking is rigid and our beliefs lead us to think that there is only one right way. Ego stands in front of the Spirit Self and hides the reality of our expansive essence. The Ego is pretty bossy and not very kind. Yoga practices help to quiet down the voice of the Ego by shining the light of awareness within through slowing down the mind to gain understanding of pure consciousness.
When this happens the voice of the Highest Self can be heard more clearly and that voice is always loving, kind and compassionate. A person with a healthy Ego can see beyond themselves to allow for differences without the label of "good, bad, right, or wrong" and can also learn to laugh at oneself when getting caught up in being too serious.
